ARE YOU READY?

As time mercilessly marches on, the frailty and brevity of life are often on my mind. I moved back home to Jones County almost four years ago after living elsewhere for 32 years. Since that time, I have taken part in several funeral services. Also, I have lost numerous close friends and classmates. Also, just last year, I lost two "extra moms" I acquired in my childhood. My uncle and his sister passed away. My mother has lost several friends also.
You may be thinking, "Steve, why all the gloom and doom?" Well, I am not trying to be pessimistic or gloomy, but realistic. It's true; the passing of friends, loved ones, and brothers and sisters in the Lord is actually all part of life, which seems to be a contradiction, but, it is not. The deaths of those we love provide us with one gut check after another. Folks passing over to the next phase of existence is a somber reality, and James plainly taught us so in chapter four of his book: "Go to now, ye that say, Today or to-morrow we will go into such a city, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away" (James 4:13-14).
What's the point? The point is that none of us know when we will depart from this life. It could be tonight or 60 years from now but, whenever it may be, we must be prepared to meet our God. Are you ready? Today is the day of salvation!
